UK: one flat amount instead of percentages
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 for an air source heat pump and £7,500 for a ground source heat pump in England and Wales. Biomass boilers get £5,000, only for rural homes off the gas grid. Checked on 26 October 2026.
| System | Grant | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Air source heat pump | £7,500 | The standard case for most homes. |
| Ground or water source heat pump | £7,500 | Includes shared ground loops. |
| Biomass boiler | £5,000 | Rural only, off the gas grid, with an emissions certificate. |
The process in four steps
- 1
Choose an MCS certified installer
Only MCS certified installers can apply for the grant. The certification is on the quote or in the MCS directory.
- 2
Installer applies to Ofgem for the voucher
The installer submits your details. You confirm the application to Ofgem, usually by email or phone.
- 3
Ofgem checks and reserves the amount
Ownership, a valid EPC and replacement of a fossil system are checked. The voucher has a limited validity window.
- 4
Installation and deduction on the invoice
After installation the installer redeems the voucher. The £7,500 appears as a deduction on your invoice; payment goes to the installer.
Eligibility at a glance
Must be true
You own the property in England or Wales. You replace a fossil system such as gas, oil or direct electric. The installer is MCS certified. A valid EPC exists, with the insulation recommendations addressed or an exemption in place.
Excluded
Hybrid systems that keep the gas boiler. Replacing an existing heat pump. Most new builds, with narrow self-build exceptions. Scotland and Northern Ireland run separate schemes.

Common questions
Is there an income test?
No. Ownership, location in England or Wales and an MCS installer decide.
Who applies?
Always the installer. Homeowners do not apply for the BUS grant themselves.
How long does the Ofgem check take?
Usually a few weeks. In practice, installer availability in the heating season is the bottleneck.
